Author to appear at Basically Books

There will be a meet and talk story with Hilo author Patricia Panahi at 6 p.m. June 2 at Basically Books in Hilo.

Panahi is half-Iranian and moved from the East Coast to Tehran, Iran, when she was 9 years old. She will share stories about her impressions of Iran as an American child in addition to presenting and reading from her debut novel, “Veil of Walls.”

Panahi later returned to the states and completed her graduate work at San Diego State University. She has taught English in Iran, California and Hawaii, and directed English language programs for international students for the University of Hawaii.

BGCBI offering summer program

The Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island is accepting applications for its Summer Enrichment Program from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 5 to Aug. 4. There is an additional fee for 5:30 p.m. pickups.

Lunch and an afternoon snack are included. From makai to mauka, the program will connect keiki to the aina (environment), wahi (place) and kau (season). Youth will build an understanding of kuleana (responsibility) and how to malama (conservation) through kilo (observation).

Safe, supervised and fun activities will include arts and crafts, gardening, sports and games and more.

Hospice of Hilo seeks volunteers

Hospice of Hilo is looking to add to its volunteer team and will conduct a training session in June for those members of the community interested in giving a few hours a week to uplift others.

New volunteers can choose to provide services such as companionship, respite, transportation, light housework, yard work or administrative support for patients facing a life-limiting or serious illness.

Training times and dates are from 4:30-8:30 p.m. June 20, 22, 27 and 29. Interested trainees can contact volunteer manager Jeanette Mochida at jeanettem@hospiceofhilo.org or call 969-1733.
